Déirdre de Búrca

Deirdre de Burca is the Director of Advocacy for World Vision’s Brussels office. World Vision is an international relief, development and advocacy organisation working with vulnerable children and their communities in almost 100 countries around the world to assist them in overcoming poverty and injustice. Along with the rest of her team, Deirdre focuses on EU-based advocacy promoting the rights of children and youth in EU external action. Deirdre is a member of EU Beyond 2015 Steering Group and has participated in advocacy activities to influence the EU position on the new Post 2015/SDG framework.

Deirdre’s background also includes eight years as a Green Party local councillor in Ireland during which time she promoted sustainable development at a local authority level. She also worked as a policy and research officer with the Irish Green Party. She was appointed to the Irish Senate in 2007 when her party entered a coalition government and she held that position for two and a half years. She was the party’s national spokesperson on European Affairs 2007-2010.
